Inauguration of Bill Turner Walkway

Richard Bampfylde

Mr. Bill Turner has been a member of IC’s Board of Trustees for more than four decades. For thirty-two of those years, he provided unparalleled vision and leadership as Chairman. Throughout his chairmanship, he watched over and guided the school with care, flexibility, ambition and, above all, a commitment to academic excellence and preserving the diversity of the student body. This all played out during some of Lebanon’s most tumultuous years in recent history.

As just one example, Mr. Turner was the driving force behind the decision to open the Ain Aar campus in order to provide students from that region access to an IC education, as they were unable to travel safely to Beirut due to the civil war. The entire school community is extremely indebted to Mr. Turner for his generosity and his many contributions to IC. The walkway, one of the most popular and busy walking routes of the school, from Martin House passed Thomson, Rockefeller and Sage Halls to AUB, will forever be remembered in his honor.

During the most recent Board meeting, with Trustees from the US and Europe joining their colleagues in Lebanon, the Bill Turner Walkway was officially inaugurated on Tuesday, June 11, 2019.  Speeches were made by IC President Dr Don Bergman as well as current Chairman of the Board Mr. Don Selinger.  Senior members of IC’s Administration joined Mr. Turner and other members of the Board of Trustees for the photo opportunity in front of the elegant plaque mounted on the wall directly across from Thomson Hall.
