IC Publications

In a time where uncertainty has become part of our daily rhythm, shifting between online and in-person learning, our students have continued to show up with resilience, focus, and a strong sense of purpose. At IC, in every setting, they have found more than continuity, they have found a space to grow, to connect, and to move forward with confidence.

This month, Inside IC highlights how students are engaging deeply in their learning journeys. Whether in the classroom or through structured programs such as chess, diplomacy, debate, drama, and MUN, they have demonstrated commitment and intellectual curiosity, progressively strengthening their oral expression and their ability to articulate ideas with clarity, respect, and conviction.

We are also proud to share that IC has earned recognition for its commitment to fostering a bully-free community. The No Bully School Badge reflects not only this achievement, but also the ongoing dedication required to build and sustain a safe, inclusive environment where every student feels respected, supported, and heard.

Creativity continues to be a powerful outlet, as students express themselves through art, where ideas take shape, identities are explored, and meaningful connections are formed. Through these creative spaces, they celebrate not only their individuality but also the rich culture and spirit of Lebanon.

More than ever, our students are emerging as thoughtful and engaged leaders. Through their work in waste management and their preparation for COP30, they are demonstrating awareness, responsibility, and a readiness to contribute to global conversations that matter.

Even in challenging times, the energy across IC remains one of movement, expression, and hope. We invite you to explore this month’s edition and discover the many ways our students continue to lead, create, and inspire.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish those marking Easter a peaceful and blessed time with their loved ones.

“I AM IC, a School’s Journey from Smyrna to Beirut”, traces the story of International College from its 1891 founding in the cosmopolitan city of Smyrna (today’s Izmir) to its present location in Beirut, Lebanon. The tale begins with Protestant Minister Rev. Alexander MacLachlan and his struggle to keep the school open through the tumult of World War I, the Greek-Turkish war and Turkish nationalism. The story continues with IC’s move to Beirut and its merging with the American University of Beirut’s Preparatory School. It was thought to be a safe move and one which would ensure IC’s survival. But once again, the school found itself having to find a way to live through the turmoil of Arab nationalism and the horrific 16-year Lebanese civil war while simultaneously struggling to become independent from AUB.

‘I am IC’, is a touching story of a school looking for a place it could finally call ‘home’.

"I just wanted to let you know that I thoroughly enjoyed reading your book. For a school to have survived in those turbulent and troubled times both in Turkey and Lebanon is a testimony of the  faith the founding fathers and their successors had in their vision. You have beautifully managed to integrate the story of the school with the historical events of the time. I was also very impressed by the amount of research that went into your work. Without you much if IC’s history might have been lost forever. All in all, well done and congratulations."
