INTERNATIONAL COLLEGE

MESSAGE OF THE SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT of Mishka Mojabber Mourani

 May 23, 2015

IB Regional Manager Mary Tadros, Over 30 schools represented by close to 100 educators from Lebanon and beyond, I bid you a warm welcome to International College!

Our school was founded in 1891 in Smyrna, and came to Beirut in the 1930s upon the invitation of the Syrian Protestant College (now known as the American University of Beirut) to serve as its preparatory section.

A little known fact about IC is that we were a founding member of the International Baccalaureate Organization!  The IB program was discontinued during the war years, but we have since reinstated our belonging and are very pleased to offer both the PYP and Diploma programs.

Pat Bassett, the former president of National Association of Independent Schools,  asked the following question at a conference on 21st century skills: ARE WE READY FOR THE BIG SHIFTS?

He was referring to  the shifts from

KNOWING

TO DOING

TEACHER CENTERED TEACHING

TO STUDENT CENTERED LEARNING

THE INDIVIDUAL

TO THE TEAM

CONSUMPTION OF INFORMATION

TO CONSTRUCTION OF MEANING

 SCHOOLS

TO NETWORKS

According to his presentation, the 5Cs - skills and values that research considers 21st century  skills- are:

1.  Character: Integrity, compassion, resilience, flexibility, CIVIC COMMITMENT

2.  Critical thinking and problem solving

3.  Creativity and entrepreneurship

4.  Collaboration: Teaming and leadership

5.  Communication: writing, speaking, networking, using technology [public speaking, presentations…]

and he added a  6TH C: COSMOPOLITANISM  i.e Cross Cultural Competency.

As I was outlining the 6 Cs, I am sure you realized that they reflect the underpinnings of the International Baccalaureate and must inform best practices in our schools, regardless of the curricula we adopt.

Professional Development has been an important part of our culture at IC.

Under the current leadership of Dr. Mahmud Shihab, IC organizes extensive training for its 350+ teachers through  in-service days featuring technology integration, media literacy, curriculum mapping, flipped learning, and screen-casting.  This year, the Educational Resource Center has trained over 1000 private and public school teachers from over 150 schools throughout Lebanon. The outreach workshops, presented in Arabic, English, or French both at IC, to benefit from the facilities, and in situ at schools located around Lebanon, have offered a wide variety of topics including technology integration in the subjects and the library, integrating theatre into classroom practice, evaluation, classroom management and lesson planning as well as teaching theory and methodologies. Over the past ten years the ERC has offered workshops to over 5000 participants from 750 Lebanese schools.

IC, through the offering of services by school representatives or through the use of our facilities, collaborates with several PD providers, including the AEFE (Agence pour l’Enseignement Francais à l’Etranger), the Ministry of Education, NESA’s Professional Development Advisory Committee , and ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education), in addition to the IB:
