Once again, a group of IC’s Grade 5 students rose to the challenge set by The Living Rainforest Trust in Oxford, England. They submitted an essay in an international schools’ essay writing competition on their vision for sustainability education. Through several information sessions, where the students had to give up two of their recesses each week, they learned about sustainable development, discovering its origins at the Earth Summit in Rio, 1992, and Agenda 21. Ultimately, the students’ task was to provide a template for teaching sustainability in schools and communities. Facilitated by their teacher, Mr. Richard Bampfylde, the students produced some excellent essays and we look forward to hearing the results in March. The students are competing against schools from across the globe, with over 1,500 essays expected to be submitted from over 70 countries. And who knows, maybe one lucky student will win the grand prize and be flown to England to receive his/her award!
