Themes: Man's inhumanity to man; the need for social order; friendship; loneliness and the need for companionship; the dark side of human beings.
Symbolism: the conch; social order, leadership (Ralph), evil nature (Jack); eye glasses (object from civilization); Spirituality (Simon)
