          International College is happy to offer this special professional development program for the public and private school teachers of Shouf.

 

        The program consists of a wide variety of workshops to be offered by I.C. teachers and administrators at Shouf National College, Saturday, November 16, 2002.

 

        This program is in line with the commitment of International College and its Educational Resources Center to high quality education which it seeks to share with schools throughout Lebanon.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

 

 

 

1.                     Combining Teacher Evaluation and Professional Development

Dr. Arthur H. Charles, Jr., IC President

 

A presentation of a process that combines non-threatening evaluation and professional development for faculty. Focus is on methodology that promotes student learning. The teacher receives feedback from peers, students, and administrators based on a self-evaluation. There will be samples of evaluation and observation forms from teacher 'journals'.

 

NOTE: The duration of this workshop will only be 2.5 hours, from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m.

 

Audience: Administrators/Department Heads

 

 

2.  Leadership in Schools

Mrs. Marie-Christine Mojabber Mourani, Senior Vice President

 

This workshop will:

·        Outline the attributes and characteristics of effective leaders

·        Examine eight leadership actions that are necessary to bring about change in our schools

·        Analyze the concept of school culture and how to define it

·        Identify three most pressing issues or problems facing our schools

 

NOTE: The duration of this workshop will only be 2.5 hours, from 12:00 to 14:30.

 

Audience:  Administrators and Teachers

 


 

3.  Probability and Statistics

Dr. Mohammad Monem, Chair of the Math Department, Secondary School

 

This workshop will introduce the main concepts of statistics mainly frequency distribution, measures of central tendency, measures of dispersion and measures of relative standing.  It will also introduce some probability distributions and methods of enumeration and probability.

 

Audience: Secondary School Math Teachers

 

 

4. Cooperative Learning vs. Frontal Teaching

Mrs. Nabila Hamadeh, Chair of the English Department, Middle School

 

This workshop will focus on different cooperative learning methods. It will also highlight the merits/demerits of frontal teaching and of cooperative learning. Participants will design their own lesson plans based on the methods taught in the workshop.

Note: Participants need to have their textbooks with them.

5. Using Inquiry to Develop and Evaluate Science Process Skills

Miss Rima Khishen, Science Department, Middle School

 

This workshop exposes teachers to simple inquiry-based activities that can be used to promote students' learning. Focus is on strategies that make assessment authentic and more skill oriented.

 

Audience: Middle School Science Teachers

 

 

 

6. Motivating Student Learning Through Science and  

Environmental Activities

Mrs. Samar Noueihed, Science Department, Middle School

 

This workshop will focus on discovering different learning strategies and feature planning a lesson with both science and environmental components.

7. Study Skills in Learning Mathematics

Mrs. Rola Younes Sleiman, Math Department, Middle School

 

Through a practical presentation, the workshop explores some skills such as constructing and interpreting graphic organizers, interpreting written and visual aids, and test taking skills, and encourages students to use them in learning mathematics.

 

Audience: Middle School Math Teachers

 

 

8. How to Teach and Evaluate Science

Miss Maya Karam, Chair of the Science Department, Ain Aar

 

Science activities require the use of different teaching methods, which will be introduced in this workshop. Participants will be shown how to help students avoid misconceptions and how to use different ways for evaluating students.

 

Audience: Elementary School Science Teachers

 


 

9. Learning Centers

Mrs. Diana Dabliz Kaaki, Elementary School

 

Learning centers allow for the use of the physical environment as areas of exploration and engage students in meaningful and independent learning through application of skills. This workshop will focus on how to develop centers while giving participants the opportunity to rotate through a variety of prepared centers.

10. Communication in Math Classes

 Mrs. Yola Sowan, Elementary School

 

This workshop will focus on enhancing students' participation in class through group work and working in pairs to promote both oral and written communication, analysis, and reasoning in a pleasant and positive class atmosphere.

 11. Every Day Counts: Using the Calendar to Teach

Mathematics  Concepts

Miss Lama Khayr, Director, Preschool & Lower Elementary, Ain Aar

 

In this session, teachers are introduced to the usage of the calendar as an on-going yearly tool to teach and enhance mathematical concepts.

12. Developing Instructional Material

  Mrs. Ghada Maalouf, Assistant to the Director, Preschool

 

This workshop intends to help teachers develop their creative ability to design and execute instructional games which will motivate students to learn while playing games, to enjoy their learning, as well as clarify and reinforce concepts and processes.

 

Audience: Preschool Teachers

 

 

13. What Can We Do with Stories Beyond Reading?

 Mrs. Mona Ghanem and Mrs. Nina Jeyachandran, Preschool

 

This workshop will provide participants with different strategies for storytelling other than just reading the text.  Participants will practice designing and preparing activities that will help reinforce concepts and extend the students' learning experiences.

14. More than Counting

Mrs. Assil Hachem and Miss Lina Mouchantaf, Preschool

 

Children's construction of mathematical knowledge goes beyond counting and recognizing numerals. While enjoying math, students are active thinkers and problem solvers. During the workshop, teachers will manipulate games and activities prepared to trigger critical thinking in their students.

 15. The Six Essential Goals of Art Education

Mrs. Samia Boulad, Head of the Art Department

 

Participants will be exposed to a detailed study of goals of art education at all levels of teaching. Through slides, hands-on activities and a short video, the different components of media  techniques of elements & principles of design, of subject matter, art appreciation, art history and especially integration of art with other disciplines will be tackled.

 

Audience: Teachers of all Levels and Administrators            

 

 

 16.  L'interdisciplinarité thématique et méthodologique

L'interdisciplinarité peut être comprise thématique et alors il faudra apprendre à l'élève que la réalité peut être cernée selon le discours qu'il appréhende. Elle peut être comprise méthodologique et alors il faudra apprendre à l'élève comment les mêmes types d'approches traversent les disciplines.

18. Pour une grammaire de sens et de l'expression

Mlle Sawsane Abdel Malak, chef du département de français, école élémentaire

 

Comment mettre les outils de la langue au service de l'expression écrite.

Ce stage a pour but de mettre l'accent sur les problèmes que rencontrent les élèves dans la production d'un texte et plus particulièrement, les difficultés qu'ils ont à réutiliser les acquis ou outils linguistiques dans leur rédaction.

19. L'enseignement actif du français dans les classes francophones

Acquérir la maîtrise de la langue pour un enfant, c’est d’abord la pratiquer dans les situations variées et l’utiliser pour répondre à des besoins multiples, notamment ceux qu’imposent les disciplines autres que le français.

20. Apprentissage de la musique entre 3 et 6 ans

Mme Céline Abou Rahhal, écoles maternelle et élémentaire

 

Ce stage abordera les thèmes suivants:

·                 "Chant et percussion" : Apprentissage d'une chanson accompagnée de percussions du corps et de percussions instrumentales.

·                 "Rythmique" : Comment introduire le rythme et la pulsation ?

·                 "Solfège": Comment introduire les notes de musique à partir du rythme ?

·        "Danse": différentes techniques de danse

تدريس اللغة العربية والأدب في المرحلة الثانوية بحسب المناهج الجديدة .21

نستعرض الكفايات المنصوص عنها في أدلة التقويم، ومن ثم يتم العمل على النصوص انطلاقاً من الكفايات المشار اليها بحيث يتوجه المعلم في عمله بحسب المناهج الجديدة صوب الكفاية تعريفاً وفهماً وامتلاكاً. ويراعى في اختيار نصوص المشغل السنوات الثلاث الثانوية مع التركيز على السنة الأولى الثانوية لأنها أساسية في هذه المرحلة.

 23. كيفية استثمار الوسائل السمعية والبصرية في تدريس اللغة العربية

 نشاطات مساعدة في القراءة والتّعبير .24

الآنسة غريس أبو خالد، دائرة اللغة العربية، المدرسة الابتدائية

 

تهدف ورشة  العمل هذه الى جعل الكتابة ذات معنى للمتعلّمين يعبّرون بواسطتها عن احتياجاتهم الشّخصيّة وآرائهم الخاصّة ومشاعرهم الذاتيّة ، بطريقة عفويّة سهلة ومبسّطة. ويتمّ ذلك كلّه من خلال عرض نشاطات مختلفة تساعد في تنمية القدرة على القراءة والتّعبير ، وتجعل المتعلّمين يدركون وظيفة اللّغة الرّئيسة ، ألا وهي التواصل مع الاخرين ، بغية تقريبهم من بعضهم من خلال التحاور والمناقشة وتبادل المعلومات والآراء ضمن إطار من العمل الفريقيّ .

   تطبيق العديد منها خلال الورشة

Participants may register upon completion of an application form and payment of fees at the Educational Resources Center office in Beirut

 

The ERC office is open on school days 7:30 to 15:00.  Since places are limited in each workshop, interested teachers are advised to register as early as possible.

 

The ERC reserves the right to cancel or postpone workshops in case of  emergency or low attendance.

 

 

Thanks to a grant from the United States Agency for International Development, we are able to offer up to 10 free registrations per school  Beyond this number, a fee of LL 30,000 will be charged per person.
