Lebanon.
The program consists of a wide variety of workshops to be offered by I.C.
teachers and administrators at the David Karam Educational Center.
This program is in line with the commitment of International College and its
Educational Resources Center to high quality education which it seeks to share
with schools throughout Lebanon.
Special thanks are due to Lycée Hanaway, Tyr, for their assistance,
cooperation and hospitality.

Emergent and beginner readers can learn from informational texts. The presenters will focus on strategies for helping children to have successful experiences with nonfiction in the early years. They will discuss examples of recently published nonfiction suitable to ages 5 through 8. The workshop will conclude with examples of projects for grades 1, 2, and 3 that make use of informational texts.
Audience: Lower Elementary School Teacher

The workshop will tackle almost every important aspect of writing at the upper Elementary and Middle school levels. The process of writing paragraphs and various types of essays will be introduced (including the sharing of various graphic organizers for the planning phase of the different writing genres). Journal and poetry writing will be made more interesting. Ways to link writing to themes and real life experiences will also be tackled. Throughout the workshop, cooperative learning structures to help manage group work will be dealt with.
Teachers are encouraged to bring their course books with them.

La construction du savoir mathématique chez les enfants dépasse l'opération de compter et de reconnaître les chiffres. Tout en jouissant des mathématiques, les élèves pensent activement et résolvent des problèmes. Durant l'atelier de travail, les enseignants vont manipuler des jeux et des activités préparées pour déclencher la réflexion critique chez leurs élèves.

Manipulatives in the teaching of mathematics promote understanding of important mathematical ideas as well as provide learning experiences intended to let students practice and refine their skills. This workshop will focus on the five strands in math, namely, number, shape and space (geometry), pattern and functions, measurement, and data handling. There will be hands-on activities to integrate manilpulatives in the teaching of these strands. The workshop will also stress the thinking processes involved in the teaching of mathematics such as strategies, communication and problem solving.

In this workshop, participants will be introduced to Performance Tasks, an alternative method of assessing students’ understanding and ability to apply math concepts and skills in real-life situations. The presenters will show what a Performance Task is and how it can be used in class to assess students’ understanding of math concepts. Participants will explore the components of a Performance Task and develop a task of their own by the end of the session.
Topics covered: Why use PTs instead of just testing?
How are graphic organizers used in Math?
Why is an assessment list important?
Participants are asked to bring textbooks and /or references used in their classes.

11. Improving Reading and Writing Skills in the Science Classroom

Most teachers agree that active reading and writing skills are essential for learning science concepts. However, science texts are often more challenging for students than other text types. Compounding the problem is the fact that some science teachers often lack the expertise and interest in teaching reading and writing. As a result, students receive fewer opportunities for these practices, and a critical science instruction tool goes unused.
This session aims at sharing techniques that we have tried and that helped our students improve their reading and writing skills.
Audience: Upper Elementary and Middle School Science Teachers

Authentic assessment of students’ understanding and skills to apply their scientific knowledge should be a part of the learning process. Planning materials and activities is the first step in developing authentic assessment for science classrooms.
Performance tasks and future wheels, among others, are vital tools that make learning experiences leave a lasting impression on students. In this workshop, participants will develop the skills of planning and utilizing those tools in biology classes.

- ملاحظة مشاكل الطلاب أثناء القراءة واقتراحات لحلها.
- تقييم قراءة الطلاب بعد تقويمها.
موجه الى أساتذة اللغة العربية في الحلقتين الأولى والثانية (الابتدائيتين)
السيدة أليسار أبي حيدر، دائرة اللغة العربية، عين عار
يواجه تلامذة الحلقة الثانية من التعليم الأساسي صعوبات جمة في فهم مهارات
كتابية متعددة وتنفيذها باستقلالية. لذلك يتناول هذا المشغل خطوات عمل
منظمة تسمح لهم بتفكيك الصعوبات في مهارات التصميم ووضع رؤوس
الأقلام والتلخيص وتبديل عناصر قصة.
موجّه الى أساتذة اللغة العربية في الحلقة الثانية (ألابتدائية)
السيدة ريما تميم، دائرة اللغة العربية، المدرسة المتوسطة
يتناول هذا المشغل ايجاد طرائق تقرب مادة القواعد من المتعلمين من خلال
انشطة مختلفة:
- استعمال بطاقات ملونة ( وضع امثلة على اللوح تسهم في استخراج المتعلمين القاعدة )
- امكانية استعمال الكمبيوتر لاستقراء الامثلة واستخراج القاعدة
- تعزيز القاعدة بتمارين شفوية وكتابية ( العاب – اصغاء – نصوص )
كما سيتطرق المشغل الى التركيز على جعل التمارين ترتكز على وظيفة القواعد في التعبير والانطلاق من القاعدة الى التعبير.

يهدف هذا المشغل الى:
- تعريف الأساتذة بمستويات التفكير والتحليل عند مقاربة أي نص من النصوص.
- النظر في طبيعة الأسئلة التي يمكن أن ننطلق منها بحيث تكون متدرجة، واضحة، مصحوبة بعناصر إجابة، تخاطب كفايات محددة.
- العمل مع المشاركين على نماذج معينه من خلال:
. تركيزها ووضع أسئلة عنها مع عناصر الاجابة
. تصميم التعبير الكتابي المستوحى منها

20. اللغة العربية في المرحلة الثانوية

يتناول هذا القسم كيفية توظيف أسئلة الفهم والتحليل وبعض الكفايات في تعليم
درس متكامل لينتقل المتعلم الى كتابة موضوع أدبي نقدي يستفيد فيه من
تلك الحيثيات مجتمعة.
(ب) - إعداد امتحان البكالوريا
كيف نختار نصاً اختبارياً يوافق أحد محاور الفرع المستهدف، ونضع عليه
الأسئلة الأهم المتدرجة والمترابطة؟ وكيف نجيب عن كل سؤال استناداً الى
بنيته تمهيداً لتقويم دقائق الإجابة؟

21. الوسائل التعليمية في تدريس الإجتماعيات

يتناول هذا المشغل وسائل تعليمية في تدريس الاجتماعيات:
أولاً: اللوحة الإخبارية: مفهومها – طرق اعدادها – الوظائف التي تؤديها – ميزاتها
من حيث إثارة الإهتمام بالموضوعات في مواد التربية، الجغرافيا والتاريخ.
ثانياً: الزيارات والرحلات: دورها – أساليب استخدامها وخطواتها.
يتخلل هذا المشغل نماذج للمناقشة.
