International College is happy to offer a professional development program for public and private school teachers. The program consists of a wide variety of workshops to be offered by I.C. teachers and administrators.
The program is in line with the commitment of International College and its
Educational Resources Center to high quality
education which it seeks to share with schools throughout Lebanon.
Special thanks are due to the administration and staff of the National Renaissance School for their assistance, cooperation and hospitality.
REGISTRATION
Participants may register upon completion of an application
form and payment of fees at the Educational Resources Center office in Beirut.
The ERC office is open on school days from 7:30 to 15:00. Since places are
limited in each workshop, interested teachers are advised to register as early
as possible.
The ERC reserves the right to cancel or postpone workshops in case of emergency
or low attendance.

The workshops will be held at the National Renaissance School, Deir el Chir, Bmekene, Aley.

1. No Budget? No Art Room? You Could Still Teach Art

In this workshop, the presenter will explore with the participants a number of studio and art appreciation activities that can form an effective Art program with a small budget and no art room!

2. Music Appreciation at the Preschool and Elementary Levels

Music is very important for a child’s development. In this workshop, we will explore the questions of why, what, when and how to teach music at the Pre-School and Elementary levels. Participants will be provided with a number of activities that foster children’s musical creativity.

3. Language Teaching in Early Childhood
Mrs. Doha Berjawi, Preschool
This workshop will present different strategies and tools to use in teaching English at the early childhood level. The presenter will elaborate on the skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking and will suggest ideas to make learning fun and easy. Participants will have hands-on experience; examples from classes, games, and ideas will be shared.

The workshop will tackle almost every important aspect of writing at the upper Elementary and Middle School levels. The process of writing paragraphs and various types of essays will be introduced (including the sharing of various graphic organizers for the planning phase of the different writing genres). Journal and poetry writing will be made more interesting. Ways to link writing to themes and real life experiences will also be tackled. Throughout the workshop, cooperative learning structures to help manage group work will be dealt with.
Teachers are encouraged to bring their course books with them.

5. Using Literature Circles in Middle and High School
Ms. Colleen MacDonell, Head Librarian
Literature Circles allow small groups of students to explore a piece of literature (novel, poem, article, short story) on their own. The experience is student-centered and student-controlled. Literature circles help readers to develop powers of analysis and criticism, while discovering the pleasures of sharing thoughts about books with their peers. Drawing on the work of Harvey Daniels and others, the presenter will explain how to organize literature circles in the language arts classroom. Several examples for use with Middle School and High School students will be modeled. The workshop will conclude with participants trying literature circles of their own, based on reading short poems and stories that the presenter will provide.

6. Les différents types de textes

Ce stage abordera l'importance de la pratique régulière de la lecture et de l'écriture. Il proposera un exploitation des différents types de textes au cycle 2 par rapport à l'introduction de l'écrit: sachant que l'activité d'écriture permet à l'enfant d'avancer dans sa connaissance des mécanismes de la langue; c'est en écrivant qu'un enfant apprend à lire.

7. Comment exploiter une bande dessinée

L'objectif de ce stage est d'inciter les enseignants à exploiter une bande dessinée d'une manière active; découvrir texte/image, les différents types d'écrits, le récit (dialogue, portrait, sentiment…) le vocabulaire de la bande dessinée et les outils de la langue adéquats.

8. Comment relier son enseignement à la vie réelle ?

Le souci de tout professeur étant de varier les supports afin d'atteindre toutes les compétences des élèves et de relier son enseignement à la vie réelle, le "PT" ou "Tâche à accomplir" est une activité conçue et orientée dans ce sens. En effet, à travers une approche systématique, l'élève apprend à appliquer les connaissances acquises dans un domaine particulier à une situation réelle. Cette tâche peut être accomplie de manière individuelle grâce à une grille d'évaluation détaillée, l'élève apprend aussi à corriger, améliorer puis évaluer ou noter son produit final.
Ce type de tâche peut être utilisée en évaluation formative ou somative, à l'oral ou à l'écrit.

9. Using a Variety of Information Sources in the Elementary Classroom

Although research and longstanding tradition support reading and using fiction books with elementary students, there is also good reason to include informational resources in the Library program. Informational books offer rich potential for inspiring curiosity and learning. Non-fiction books are a great vehicle for teaching comprehension strategies and content knowledge. This workshop will focus on using a variety of information sources and will present examples of projects done in the Library.

10. Teaching Math Using Manipulatives
Miss Lama Khayr, Preschool and Lower Elementary Director, Ain Aar
Manipulatives in the teaching of mathematics promote understanding of important mathematical concepts as well as provide learning experiences intended to let students practice and refine their skills. This workshop will focus on the five strands in math - number, shape and space (geometry), pattern and functions, measurement, and data handling. There will be hands-on activities to integrate manipulatives in the teaching of these strands. The workshop will also stress elements of the thinking process involved in the teaching of mathematics such as strategies, communication and problem solving.

11. How to Make your Math Class Interactive

The workshop will be divided into two parts; in the first session, participants will be actively engaged in using Algebra tiles with a variety of concepts including integers operations, combining like terms, distributive property, multiplication and factoring polynomials. The second part, teachers will be exposed to activities that enhance the mental Math skills of the students.

12. Language Arts Activities: A multi-sensory approach

This workshop will present a collection of concrete, fun and age-appropriate activities for teaching Language Arts at the Preschool. The participants will be involved in implementing and extending the activities to ensure that language learning is personalized.

14. Classroom and School Science Projects and Activities

This workshop will provide teachers with various science activities that can be carried out in the classroom or lab to enhance content knowledge of the subject, process skills, and communication, including writing skills.
In addition, the workshop will show how school projects, science fairs and interdisciplinary projects raise students' awareness of their global community. Participants will experience how projects and activities encourage students to use scientific methods to solve problems as well as enable students to apply and relate what they learn in class to real life situations.

15. Performance Tasks: Efficient Tools for Teaching Chemistry
Mr. Nizar El-Mehtar, Chairperson of the Chemistry Department, Secondary School
The purpose of this session is to acquaint participants with performance tasks as efficient tools for engaging students in constructive learning of chemistry and for promoting their problem solving skills. Participants will be trained to construct a performance task and to align it with specific objectives. The proper technique for writing all the sections (background, task, purpose, procedure, and assessment) will be thoroughly discussed, but the assessment list will be given special attention as it reflects the alignment with well defined objectives and addresses multiple intelligences.

This workshop focuses on assessment through the use of two tools: Rubrics and Performance Tasks. These are powerful tools to motivate the student to work towards a higher-level of performance. Rubrics and Performance Tasks inform and improve teaching. They provide criteria used to determine excellent performance. They provide directions for teaching and goals for the students. They can be adapted or created to fit almost any learning context or activity you value enough to include in your curriculum.

سيتناول هذا المشغل مواضيع أساسية تهم المعلمين ومنها:
1- طرق مختلفة لإغناء مخزون المتعلم اللغوية.
2- أفكار منوعة للإفادة من المفردات المكتسبة أثناء عملية التعبير الشفهي والكتابي.
3- وسائل شيقة لتعليم المهارات الضرورية من خلال الفنون الجميلة والأنماط الأدبية.

يواجه تلامذة الحلقة الثانية من التعليم الأساسي صعوبات جمة في فهم مهارات كتابية متعددة وتنفيذها باستقلالية. لذلك يتناول هذا المشغل خطوات عمل منظمة تسمح لهم بتفكيك الصعوبات في مهارات التصميم ووضع رؤوس الأقلام والتلخيص وتبديل عناصر القصة.

- الإعتماد على كتاب المطالعة في تعليم كافة الأنماط والكفايات المطلوبة في المنهج: الوصف، السرد، الرسالة، القصة وعناصرها، دراسة شخصية، تلخيص...
- عرض عمل نموذجي.
- أعمال تطبيقية ضمن مجموعات.
- عرض الأعمال ومناقشتها.

أهداف التواصل الشفوي:
- إغناء مخزون المتعلمين اللغوي.
- تنمية الذاكرة.
- التشجيع على تعبير شفوي سليم يخدم بدوره التعبير الكتابي.
- حث المتعلمين على الخلق بابتكار أفكار والتعبير عنها شفوياً.

25. طرائق التعليم: المحاضرة والمشروع

أولاً: نبذة تاريخية عن استخدام طريقة المحاضرة. عيوبها المتمثلة في سرد المعلومات من قبل المدرس. الأساليب التي بها يتم تحسين طريقة المحاضرة.
ثانياً: التعريف بالمشروع كنشاط تعليمي يتم في موقف مماثل لما يجري في الحياة الواقعية. شمول الموضوع على أربع خطوات – كيف يتم توظيف المشروع لتنمية مهارات البحث التاريخي لدى الطلاب.
