Miss Jehad Salem, Coordinator of Physical and Social Education/Character Education Program, Elementary School
Mrs. Beverly Shabshab, Special Needs Instructor, Elementary School
Building character is as essential as learning to read, write, and compute. The challenging years of lower and upper cycles in elementary school are crucial to building trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. The presenters will share their knowledge and experience in building a Character Education Program for Ages 6 to 10 in their school, and what outcomes resulted over a four-year period based on their first-hand experience.

Throughout this workshop, participants will also explore the use of assessment rubrics as an alternative to percentage grades, and will learn how this can help set expectations for student achievement.

8. Enriching the English Lesson with Performance Tasks
Mrs. Connie Hadba, English Department, Middle School
Mrs. Randa Soubaih, English Chairperson, Elementary School
In this workshop, teachers will explore a non-traditional method of assessing students. The Performance Task requires students to demonstrate that they can use the knowledge and skills they have acquired during the unit of study.
Workshop participants will examine a Task and its components; identify the steps involved in writing a PT and write their own Performance Task.
NB: Participants are requested to come prepared with a short story or a novel that they would be interested in using as a basis for designing their Performance Tasks.
One of the most complex tasks we ask of middle and high school students is that they write independent research papers. Drawing on previous experience with these levels in Canada and current work here in Lebanon, the presenter will take you through the process step by step: 1. Getting started with a search strategy. 2. Moving from topic to thesis. 3. Keeping track of sources. 4. Developing an outline. 5. Note-taking. 6. Editing. 7. The final draft: essay and bibliography. Learn field-testing techniques to help your students produce thoughtful, original research papers.
Audience: Middle and Secondary Schools Teachers

FRANçAIS
