5. Building Character Based on the Three Rs – Respect, Responsibility and Reflection

6. Using Literature Circles in the Elementary School

Literature Circles allow small groups of students to explore a piece of literature (novel, poem, article, short story) on their own. The experience is student-centered and student-controlled. Literature circles help readers to develop powers of analysis and criticism, while discovering the pleasures of sharing thoughts about books with their peers. Drawing on the work of Harvey Daniels and others, the presenter will explain how to organize literature circles in the language arts classroom from grades three to five. Several examples will be modeled. The workshop will conclude with participants trying literature circles of their own, based on reading of short poems and stories that the presenter will provide.

9. Atelier d'écriture poétique

Cet atelier a pour objectif d'initier les professeurs à la création poétique au moyen de procédés ou jeux surréalistes. La poésie n'est pas abordée en tant que genre littéraire mais comme récréation de l'esprit. Les participants produiront des textes et découvriront le plaisir de l'invention poétique. Ils seront convaincus de l'intérêt d'utiliser ces techniques d'écriture avec leurs élèves comme entraînement grammatical ludique.

11. Internet Activities in the Classroom

This workshop will introduce teachers to Hotlists, Scrapbooks, Treasure Hunts, Subject Samplers, and WebQuests through which the internet can be used in the classroom as a resource and as a teaching tool. Participating teachers will have the chance to build a Hotlist, a Treasure Hunt, and a WebQuest using Filamentality®. Internet access will be available to all participants throughout the workshop.

12. Enhancing the Math Lesson With Manipulatives

Manipulatives in the teaching of mathematics promote understanding of important mathematical concepts as well as provide learning experiences intended to let students practice and refine their skills and deepen their understandings. This workshop will focus on the five strands in math, namely, number, shape and space (geometry), pattern and functions, measurement, and data handling. The hands-on activities will integrate manipulatives in the teaching of these strands. The workshop will also stress the thinking processes involved in the teaching of mathematics such as strategies, communication and problem solving.

14. Strategies and Techniques for Developing Student Communication Skills in Mathematics

The aim of this workshop is to develop strategies and techniques that help teachers in developing students' mathematical communication skills. 19. Alternative Learning and Assessment in Science

Upper elementary and middle school biology teachers will be introduced to a variety of alternative learning and assessment methodologies. During this session, activity work sheets and performance based tasks (PTs) from different grade levels will be shared with the participants. The participants will practice how to plan and write activity work sheets and PTs whereby each activity is an application to a concept or more learned throughout the unit. Process skills embedded within these activities include, reading comprehension, writing skills, writing research reports, sequencing events, drawing and labeling skills, problem solving (thinking skills strategies and science skills), decision making, and different communication strategies. Students will acquire different work habits while performing these activities and tasks such as: following directions, organizing work and managing time, attending to details required, and committing to neatness and responsibility.

20. You Can't Just Talk About Science: You Have To Do It!
