February 26, 8:30 – 14:00
After a written or oral assignment is given,
how will it be assessed? Too often we put off deciding on the assessment of the
task until later. Yet students need to know what teachers consider important
when they do an assignment.
This workshop will look at the rationale for using assessment lists and rubrics
to evaluate student performance and why it is important to provide this
information to students when the assignment is given.
Participants will identify scoring criteria, look at the format and learn the
rudimentary steps for developing assessment lists and scoring rubrics for
written and oral assignments. They will also be given the opportunity to develop
their own assessment list for a written and oral assignment.
Participants are encouraged to bring a sample of a writing or oral assignment to
use during this workshop.

47. Improving Reading and Writing Skills in the Science Classroom
Miss Rima Khishen and Mrs. Nahla Jamaleddine, Science Department, Middle School
February 26, 8:30 – 14:00
Most teachers agree that active reading and writing skills are essential for learning science concepts. However, science texts are often more challenging for students than other text types. Compounding the problem is the fact that some science teachers often lack the expertise and interest in teaching reading and writing. As a result, students receive fewer opportunities for these practices, and a critical science instruction tool goes unused.
This session aims at sharing techniques that we have tried and that helped our students improve their reading and writing skills.
