International College is happy to offer a professional development program for teachers of Lebanese public and private schools, consisting of a wide variety of workshops covering all levels and various subject matter areas in English, French and Arabic.

 

The program is in line with the commitment of International College and its Educational Resources Center to high quality education which it seeks to promote throughout Lebanon.

REGISTRATION

Participants may register upon completion of an application form and payment of fees at the Educational Resources Center office in Beirut. 

The ERC office is open on school days from 7:30 to 15:00.  Since places are limited in each workshop, interested teachers are advised to register as early as possible. During the winter holiday, the ERC office will be open on December 26, 27 and 28, from 8:00 to 13:00.

The ERC reserves the right to cancel or postpone workshops in case of emergency or low attendance.

The workshops will be held at International College, Ras Beirut campus, Bliss Street.

LL 40,000 per participant for a five-hour workshop

2. What’s a Coordinator’s Job, Anyway? – Parts I and II

The responsibility of a coordinator is to manage the team's work and maintain its cohesiveness, to prepare meetings, and to set discussion groups as well as to observe teachers and discuss teaching-learning situations. But how does the coordinator manage all this? Organization and planning is the key to proper leadership skills. This workshop will equip participants with tools and ideas for better planning and cues for running more focused meetings and classroom observations.

3. Sing, Dance and Play

10. Teachers and Librarians Working Together to Improve Student Learning

When teachers and school librarians work together to plan library activities, they can greatly improve student learning and acquisition of literacy skills. In this workshop, we will be looking at library use from two different points of view – the classroom teacher and the school librarian.

During the workshop, participants will be involved in activities such as “Resource Demo”, “Library Jeopardy”, and role play activities that help teachers learn about library facilities and how collaboration with the librarian can result in successful library experiences for their students. Teachers and librarians alike will benefit from the discussion and idea exchange during this activity-rich workshop.

11. Writing as Documentary

All writing is documentation.  From the earliest stages, students write to clarify thought and document their world, both public and private.  In this workshop, participants will examine writing as documentary and its teaching as a process of facilitating and directing. Different forms of writing and writing purposes will be presented and strategies for creating a writers’ workshop in the classroom will be discussed. Assessment for growth will be integral to our discussions.

13. The ABC of Reading and Assessment

This workshop will focus on effective ways to help students become literate within a balanced literacy framework that provides for reading, writing, and language development. The presenter will introduce specific instructional approaches, including shared, guided and independent reading, interactive writing, writing as a process, and word study.

The workshop stresses the importance of teaching students strategies to use during and after reading as well as vocabulary building strategies. It will also touch upon assessment tools in reading.

15. L’évaluation et l’auto-évaluation en FLE

Il s’agit d’expliciter les compétences (compréhensions écrite et orale, expressions écrite et orale) définies par le CECRL (Cadre Européen Commun de Références pour les langues) et d’établir ensemble des critères d’évaluation pour chacune d’entres elles.  Le résultat de notre réflexion et de nos travaux (nous corrigerons des copies d’élèves et comparerons les résultats) sera présenté sous forme de grilles que chacun pourra exploiter dans le cadre de ses cours.  La deuxième partie de ce stage sera dédiée à l’auto-évaluation (ou comment conduire nos élèves vers l’autonomie) afin que ceux-ci acquièrent davantage de sens autocritique et améliorent leurs performances.

22. Creating Interactive Blogs for your Classes Using Blogger

The purpose of this workshop is to demonstrate how blogs can help teachers to develop challenging and interactive learning environments to meet the digital lifestyle of the millennial generation of high school students. This will allow the creation of subject-related blogs that can be authored by several teachers teaching the same subject.

25. Encouraging the Young Reader: Activities for Reading & Writing in the Library

“Few children learn to love books by themselves. Someone has to lure them into the wonderful world of the written word: Someone has to show them the way” – Prescott.  This workshop highlights the role of school libraries in nurturing lifelong readers. Many ideas and activities will be planned and examined on how to offer opportunities of reading and writing in the Elementary school Library. The participants will be exposed, as well, to the process of classification (DDC) in the library. The workshop will focus on young readers (Age 6-10) and will provide participants with samples of library activities for Grades One through Five.

27. Teaching Math Using Manipulatives

Manipulatives in the teaching of mathematics promote understanding of important mathematical concepts as well as provide learning experiences intended to let students practice and refine their skills.  This workshop will focus on the five strands in math - number, shape and space (geometry), pattern and functions, measurement, and data handling. There will be hands-on activities to integrate manipulatives in the teaching of these strands. The workshop will also stress elements of the thinking process involved in the teaching of mathematics such as strategies, communication and problem solving.

28. Activities and Assessment in Geometry at the Middle Cycle

29. Geoplane / Geospace

Geoplane / Geospace is a software that can accompany the students from grade 6 to the Terminal classes. The work on this software reinforces definitions and mathematical properties. It will help students conjecture, visualize and learn how to construct mathematical figures.  Participants will be exposed to the different functions of this software through activities that can be used directly in their classrooms.

  2. Un travail de groupe dans le but de préparer une activité de géométrie centrée sur un sujet spécifique et de lui concevoir une évaluation pertinente.

31. Health and Athletics at the Elementary Level

Children of today are becoming increasingly inactive; this results in weight problems and, in worse cases, obesity. How can the elementary physical education program help children develop a good self-image, sound exercise habits, an awareness of their bodies, and the importance of developing a healthy life style?

This workshop will focus on the strands of Athletics and Health in the Elementary Physical Education program. In Athletics/Health students develop motor skills, coordination, agility, and the five components of physical fitness. They learn collaborative skills and how to record and analyze their own and others’ data. They also learn how to devise their own program for healthy living.

This workshop is a physically active session; hence all participants are expected to be dressed out in PE clothes and gym shoes.

35. Creative Dramatics for Young Children

The use of creative drama in the classroom is a student-focused process where experiential learning can be fostered and developed within any given curriculum. It can help students to develop cognitive and divergent thinking skills, inventive creativity, as well as stimulate language development. In this workshop, participants will be exposed to different types of dramatic play activities which meet children’s needs, interests, and abilities. They will have the opportunity to create different kinds of puppets and will practice manipulating them. They will realize how easy and interesting it is to use puppets in their teaching while transforming stories to puppet shows.

36. Energy in our Minds: Concepts and Measures

This workshop is designed to help science teachers at the middle school level resolve students’ naïve conceptions about work, energy, and power. Teachers will be able to develop a manipulable model of the abstract idea of energy that is much more plausible, intelligible and fruitful than one based solely on a verbal description or calculation.

To set a common ground among participants, the first session of this workshop will consist of a thorough lecture/presentation about the targeted concepts. The second session will suggest how these concepts could be presented in the classroom given the allocated time and official exam questions.

The aim of this session is to engage teachers in a variety of activities to make the science classroom not only an inviting place but also a place where students learn to think like scientists. In this session, participants will explore methods for preparing guided-inquiry lab activities that are more student-centered. They will also learn how to use the sticky notes as a graphic organizer to enhance students’ conceptual understanding of the scientific method. Participants will also take the role of the learner to explore a learning activity where students learn to be life-long learners, work in groups and be responsible for their own learning.

- إفساح المجال أمام مخيّلة المتعلّم كي ينطلق بالفكرة أو الإحساس الى عالم من الكلمات.

- تقييم ما اكتسبه المتعلّم بعد أن أدرك ماذا تعلّم؟ لماذا؟ وكيف؟

55. كيف ننتقل من فهم النّص الى التعبير؟

يعنى هذا المشغل بدعوة المعلّمين لمقاربة نصّ، والتدرّب على صياغة أسئلة متدرّجة تقود المعلّم إلى فهم النّص فهماً مجملاً ومفصّلا والتّمييز بين الاسئلة التي تساعد على الفهم، وتلك التي تربك وتعيق عملية الاستيعب وكيفية الانتقال من الفهم الى التعبير شفهياً وكتابياً عن رأي أو موقف يماثل النصوص موضوع الدرس أو يخالفها.

كما يعنى المشغل بالاجابة عن الأسئلة الآتية:

كيف نختار نصّاً؟

متى يمكن توظيف النّص:

- لتعليم القواعد اللغوية والإملائية؟

- لتعليم القراءة بصحة وطلاقة؟

- لتقييم أداء المتعلّم؟ وكيف؟

56. المهمة الأدائية وعملية التعلم

يهدف المشغل الى تعريف المشاركين بالمهمة الأدائية Performance Task بما هي نشاط تعليمي يتيح للمتعلم توظيف المعارف المكتسبة وتحليلها بهدف الوصول الى استنتاج أو اتخاذ مواقف حياتية لما تعلمه.

سيتعرف المشاركون في المشغل في قسمه الأول الى المهمة الأدائية غايةً وأهدافاً وأقساماً. ويلي ذلك جانب عملي يتمثل في كتابة المشاركين فردياً أو جماعياً لمهمات أدائية يختارونها مستندين الى المنهج المعمول به في مدارسهم.
