International College is happy to offer a professional development program for teachers of Lebanese public and private schools, consisting of a wide variety of workshops covering all levels and various subject matter areas in English, French and Arabic.

 

The program is in line with the commitment of International College and its Educational Resources Center to high quality education which it seeks to promote throughout Lebanon.

REGISTRATION

Participants may register upon completion of an application form and payment of fees at the Educational Resources Center office in Beirut.

The ERC office is open on school days from 7:30 to 15:00.  Since places are limited in each workshop, interested teachers are advised to register as early as possible.

The ERC reserves the right to cancel or postpone workshops in case of emergency or low attendance.

Venue

The workshops will be held at International College, Ras Beirut campus, Bliss Street.

Fees

LL 40,000 per participant for a five-hour workshop
LL 20,000 per participant for a 2½ hour workshop

3. Dance Informances: An Alternative to Recitals & Formal Performances

It is a teacher’s nightmare to present to parents and colleagues the work of the students in an artistic way.

Informances (informal performances) are an informal and informative showing of students’ work. Informances may be arranged during the school hours to share work with other classes or for parents.

4. Handling Teenagers in the Classroom

Miss Rosita Abla, Counselor and IB Psychology Instructor

This workshop will present different strategies to recognize, handle and help students in distress who show signs of hyperactivity, aggressiveness, impulsivity, test anxiety, time management, etc. In this workshop the presenter will be introducing methods for detecting students who are facing problems and will be offering suggestions on dealing with difficult children.  Issues of classroom management and problem solving will also be tackled.

5. Encouraging the Reading Habits of Upper Elementary and Middle School Students

This workshop is planned for both teachers and librarians who are interested in encouraging their middle & secondary school students to build life-long reading habits. During this workshop, we will be exploring activities such as book talks, literature circles, library lizards and others that teachers and librarians can use to encourage their students’ habits of life-long reading for both pleasure and work.

Participants will need to bring with them a book or reading article that they can use to develop their own book talk for some activities during this workshop.

8. Activities and Assessment in Geometry in the Middle Cycle

A – Presentation of some activities in geometry for different levels at the middle school.  These activities will be followed by an analysis of tests related to the topics presented.

9. Classroom Management and Daily Routines

In this workshop, participants will be exposed to ways of managing the classroom by working on learning centers, daily routines (such as circle time, calendar, morning meetings, snack, etc...), different ways of giving instruction and grouping students.

Experience will be shared and discussion will pertain to the implications this has on planning, teaching and learning.

10. Assessment of Learning, or for Learning?

Teachers in all content areas can use assessment practices to enhance learning and teaching. Classroom assessment practices have the potential not only to measure and report learning but also to promote it. By using a range of assessment strategies, teachers will be better informed about their teaching while simultaneously allowing children to take a more active role in their learning. Assessing, recording, evaluating and reporting are integral parts of the assessment process. This workshop will provide participants with a clear understanding of the reasons for assessment, what is being assessed, the criteria for success and the variety of methods by which assessment in made.

11. Designing a Science Interdisciplinary Project

An interdisciplinary science project is a collaborative activity where concepts and perceptions from across the science disciplines are shared. Students are given the opportunity to investigate a topic from biological, chemical, and physical perspectives, where they enroll in community-based problem solving, critical thinking, and decision making. This session aims to address three focus questions:

  1. What are the stages for designing an interdisciplinary project?

  2. How is this project assessed?

  3. What educational gains are expected from the interdisciplinary approach to science teaching?

12. Addressing Different Learning Styles in Science Teaching and Assessment
